The Principal of the Holy Child College of Education, Mrs Margaret Lemaine, has said teachers are the catalyst for achieving academic excellence, moral integrity and social justice.
She said, “People are becoming more and more irresponsible in their ways, so there is a need for our training colleges to promote good moral behaviour among students who are being trained to be teachers,” she noted.
Mrs Lemanie said this at the matriculation of the school at the week end.
She urged students to inculcate discipline and high moral standards in the students in order to make them achieve academic excellence and be well-balanced individuals.
Mrs Lemaine advised the students to broaden their intellectual horizons, adding that “teachers are seen by the outside world to know everything. Thus, they should be curious as “teachers-to be”.
Mrs Margaret also stated that out of the 230 students who applied, only 190 of them got admission due to infrastructual constraint. She was, however, hopeful of an increase, come next academic year.
Monsignor Andreas Ghansa, who delivered a message on behalf of the Most Rev. John Martin Darko, observed that women played an important role in the education of children, so they should, as female teachers, show them love since children assimilate what they are taught.

Grace Omaboe charged

THE Proprietress of Peace and Love Orphanage, Madam Grace Omaboe, popularly known as Maame Dokono, was yesterday put before the Accra Circuit Court charged with four counts of operating a home without licence and exposing a child to harm.
Two of her caregivers, Mary Anaglate and another whose name was only given as Daavi and currently on the run, have also been charged.

Maame Dokono was alleged to have illegally operated a home between March 7, 2006 and January 2008 without licence.
She is also accused of exposing Joseph Kobi Omaboe, then 15 months old and now deceased, to harm which eventually led to his premature death.
She pleaded not guilty to the charges and was granted bail in the sum of GH¢30,000 with two sureties, while Mary was granted a GH¢10,000 bail with two sureties.
They are both expected to reappear on November 23, 2009.
The facts of the case are that a year after the establishment of the orphanage, Nana Yaa Agyeman, who was then the supervisor of the home, resigned and officially wrote a report to the Ghana National Commission on Children about the state of affairs at the orphanage.
However, no action was taken.
The proprietress of the home was accused of engaging the services of unqualified and inadequate number of persons to take care of the needs of about 60 children.
Also the children were underfed, they slept in dirty and smelly rooms, some of which were not well ventilated. They were also made to live in darkness because of the non-payment of electricity bills, which led to the older ones taking advantage of the darkness to abuse the younger ones.
On December 31, 2008, Maame Dokono travelled to Holland and left GH¢50 for the upkeep of the 60 inmates.
The situation got out of hand and the Department of Social Welfare received reports of the situation in the home.
It was then recommended that four of the children, including a two-year-old and a six-month-old, be evacuated.
After the evacuation, it emerged that the six-month-old child had been sodomised, while the other one had been defiled.
Further investigations revealed that Joseph Omaboe and Adom Omaboe had been put into hot water by Daavi and in the process Joseph sustained serious burns, as well as injuries, leading to his death on October 6, 2007.

christmas gifts

Christmas is here again and as per the norm or tradition many would want to show love and care towards those they appreciate and cherish.

With last year's christmas full of tension due to the election, it is assumed or perhaps expected that this christmas will be more excitng. Having gained another spot in the world cup and also being the first African country to win the FIFA U-20 world cup brings enough joy for everyone to be happy. Irrespective of the 'hardship' most people seem to complaining of

A visit to some Gift shops revealed that although this year's christmas seems to be filled with a lot of memorable experiences, the items on sale are not really different from what has always been on sale on previous christmas . Though there have been an improvement in them. Most shops have hampers, dresses in the latest trend of fashion, perfumes for both young and old as well as male and female.

Speaking to some men on what they would get for their girlfriends on christmas. Some men when given the option of a mobile phone, jewellery, teddy bear or take their girlfriends out on a date on christmas: Opted for a teddy bear with the reason that thier girlfriends will cuddle it when they miss them and it will represent them when they are absent.

Others, however, will take their girlfriends on a candle-lit dinner to propose to them after having dated for quiet some time. Some will rather spend the holidays with the love of their lifes and reiterate their love for them, as they hardly get the chance to spend time together.

Some Girlfriends on the other hand will for the first time ask their boyfriends out on a date and pay the bills. Others will buy something that they know their boyfriends have been yearning to have to show them the extend they can go to show their love. A few were, however, not so enthused about the christmas as they seem to enjoy themselves everyday and thus will be going out on dates as usual but not because its christmas. They will however thank God for a year full of life and fun.

With Parents most people said they will invite them to spend the holidays at their end. While others will rather go and spend the holidays with their parents. Some were however of the view that they will ask their parent what they would want for christmas and buy it for them, that it if it is within the reach of their pocket.

With all this opinions from people it is obvious that christmas is a season of sharing and caring. However it shouldn't be a give and take affair that you expect to recieve something from someone you gave a gift the previous year but rather be thinking of who you can give something this christmas. As the good book says there is more blessing in giving than recieving.

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A PROSPROUS NEW YEAR.
